National Organization for Women—San Diego County Chapter

Message from the President by Linda Cianciolo

March is Women’s History Month with International Women’s Day on March 8th. Women in the United States organized the first national Women’s Day in response to the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that killed 146 women who were trapped in a locked workroom. Their actions helped inspire International Women’s Day, which later became a recognition week for Women’s History, and in 1987 was expanded by Congressional action to the entire month of March. Celebrate the women who made our nation great! [See Page 5 to find out how you can celebrate women who have made San Diego great!]

March is also election time — the primaries are Tuesday, March 5th. Please, everyone, exercise this all-important right, which women like Susan B. Anthony worked all their lives to give you, and VOTE! There are many crucial state and local races that could be decided that day, as well as many ballot initiatives. Check out the California NOW website (www.canow.org) for CA-NOW PAC’s endorsement for the 2002 primaries.

Next month, April, is Equal Pay Month — U.S. women face one of the largest gender-based pay gaps in the developed world. Unfortunately, many women are still boxed into low paying “women’s work.” Women working full time earn on the average only 74 cents to their male counterparts’ dollar.

April is also California NOW State Conference time and this year we are lucky to be the host city for the conference. Be sure to save the weekend of April 26 through April 28 to attend the conference. Plan to spend Friday evening, April 26, with us at the Holiday Inn-Bayside for a reception and meet NOW members from throughout the state and region. There will be many interesting workshops and a film screening on Saturday, April 27, and presentations and speeches on Sunday morning, April 28. More information will be forthcoming soon. We really need your support for the conference and we encourage your attendance at any (or all!) of the conference events.
